Boston Acoustics A40 Speaker Repair, Specs, & History.
The Boston Acoustics A40 Speakers model was launched by Boston Acoustics the early 1980's and where probably Boston's most popular speaker.
The A40 Loudspeaker is a two-way, stand-mounted loudspeaker system. Drivers include a ¾" (19mm) ferrofluid-cooled, soft dome tweeter and a 6.5" (170mm) paper cone woofer. The crossover frequency is 3.5kHz and the frequency response is 68Hz–20kHz, ±3dB. Sensitivity is listed as 88.5dB/W/m with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. The recommended power is 5–40 Watts.
The Boston A40s are often considered "legendary" speakers and where sold for many years. The A40s had good sensitivity and stereo imaging. Boston made these speakers with sealed (acoustic suspension) enclosures which is a more rare design then the more common ported (bass reflex) design seen in most speakers. Sealed enclosures tend to give crisper, more accurate sound, but tend to be less efficient.
The small A40s have enough output to fill up a small room with good sound but are considered too small for primary speakers in larger rooms.
Like all speakers with foam surrounds the foam around the woofers edge will eventually deteriorate (rot). We sell speaker repair kits to refoam the woofers to like new condition. Our special kit fits unique Boston Acoustics speakers and is the only one that works for Boston Acoustics A40 speakers without trimming.
